National History Day Introduction

National History Day (NHD) is the most influential historical research academic event for middle school students in the United States. This academic activity is a historical research academic activity for students in grades 4 to 12. It is an academic activity aimed at improving students' critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, research and reading and writing skills, and developing self-esteem and confidence in historical research and skill development.
National History Day (NHD), founded in 1974, is a non-profit educational organization from the University of Maryland, College Park, dedicated to improving the teaching quality of teachers and the learning efficiency of students. NHD provides year-round academic research projects for middle and high school students. Every year, more than 500,000 students conduct first-hand research based on selected topics and use various innovative forms to present their results. Students who attend NHD study multiple disciplines including social studies, technology, languages, art and drama, and special education.
Every fall, NHD releases historical topics. Contestants decide on a theme and begin a year-long historical research, in-depth analysis and interpretation of historical materials, and draw important conclusions with historical significance. Contestants present their research results through various creative ways such as papers, performances, exhibitions, documentaries and websites. These works are judged in local competitions every spring, and historians and education experts select outstanding works and send them to the University of Maryland, College Park to participate in the national competition held every June.

2. Can I add pictures, such as illustrations, charts, etc., to my paper?

Illustrations are acceptable. Text counts towards the word count. Make sure the illustrations are directly related to the text and don’t overdo it. Judges tend to be text-based, and they may not be impressed by excessive illustrations.
