2026 Yau Science Award (Mainland China Region)

Registration for the 18th Yau Science Award (Mainland China Region) in 2026 officially launched on July 1. Six disciplines—Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Economic and Financial Modeling—have simultaneously opened their online registration portals.

1. Competition Schedule (Subject to official text)

Preparation Phase: From mid-April
Interested students begin preparing research reports and other competition materials.

Registration and Submission of Materials: July 1 - September 15
Register as an individual or team (1-3 members) and submit research reports and other competition materials.

Compared to the registration starting on April 15 in 2025, the registration time for the 2026 Yau Science Award (Mainland China Region) has seen a key adjustment!

The registration system will not officially open until July 1 this year, and the registration cycle is significantly compressed. However, the final submission time for research reports remains the same as in previous years, set for September 15. This means the overall competition pace is more compact, placing higher demands on students' preliminary research preparation. Only by planning ahead and making precise efforts can students seize the initiative in the research track and achieve a leapfrog advancement in college admissions.

Rather than spending time hesitating whether to participate or worrying about completing the work, and wasting the current golden preparation period, it is better to take the initiative and firmly grasp the rhythm in your own hands.

3. Award Setup

The Global Finals will award for each of the 6 disciplines: 1 Gold Award, 1 Silver Award, 3 Bronze Awards, and 5 Excellence Awards.

An additional highest award: Science Gold Award.

Yau Science Award

The Yau Science Award is a scientific innovation award for middle school students initiated and established by the mathematical master Shing-Tung Yau in 2008. It is currently the only scientific research competition facing global Chinese middle school students. Since 2022, it has been included in the Ministry of Education's list of national competitions for primary and secondary school students.

The competition covers six basic disciplines: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, and Economic and Financial Modeling. It advocates innovative thinking and teamwork, abandoning test papers and standard answers, and allowing students to participate in the competition by submitting research reports. In 2025, the "Noether Award" for female middle school students will also be included in the competition framework.

Over the past 18 years, more than 20,000 teams have participated, covering 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and multiple countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, India, Thailand, and Australia. A total of 647 student teams and over 1,125 individuals have won awards. The Yau Award has formed a complete training model for cultivating middle school students' scientific research and innovation capabilities, becoming one of the most authoritative and influential middle school science competitions internationally.

Every year, many students admitted to top US undergraduate programs have experience in high-value international scientific research competitions. Winning an award in the Yau Award competition makes it easier to become a "seed candidate" in the eyes of Ivy League schools.
