The S.-T. Yau High School Science Award is a science innovation award for middle school students initiated by mathematics master Shing-Tung Yau in 2008. It is also the only scientific research competition for Chinese middle school students around the world.

The Yau Science Award is a scientific competition based on "scientific research academic papers" and "professional academic defense". It advocates innovative thinking and teamwork, abandons test papers and standard answers, and participates in the form of submitting papers.

The S.-T. Yau High School Science Award has developed from a single mathematics award fifteen years ago to today's mathematics award, physics award, chemistry award, biology award, computer award and economic and financial modeling award, and has a high international influence.

The registration and submission of papers for the 2024 S.-T. Yau High School Science Award (China Mainland Division) have all ended in September. A total of 2,139 teams registered this year and submitted a total of 969 papers. After three rounds of review by the organizing committees of each sub-competition area for one month, the semi-finalists were selected and announced as follows. The semi-finals of the Chinese mainland competition area will be held on November 2/3/4, 2024 (Saturday or Sunday), in the form of interview and defense. The interview time for each team is 30 minutes, divided into 15 minutes of PPT presentation and 15 minutes of judges' questions and answers. The specific arrangements are subject to the notification of each competition area.

Why should you participate in the Yau Science Award?

1. International influence

So far, the Yau Science Award has been successfully held for 16 sessions, with more than 2,000 middle schools and more than 12,000 teams participating, covering more than 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China and many overseas countries such as the United States and Singapore. Well-known professors and scientists from all over the world serve as judges or consultants for the award.

2. Successful application assistance

About half of the award-winning young students have successively entered famous Chinese and foreign universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Harvard, MIT, Yale and Princeton, and many of them have entered universities to work and embark on the road of scientific research.

The S.-T. Yau High School Science Award is divided into three major regions:

China Mainland Region: Divided into southern and northern China, with an additional eastern region for the Mathematics Award.

Asia Region: Includes Chinese students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and other Asian countries, excluding mainland China.

North America Region: Includes Chinese students from countries outside of Asia.
