Regeneron ISEF 2024 BMED First Award: Highlights and Analysis

In the previous article,we analyzed the winning projects in the Behavioral and Social Sciences (BEHA) category in detail. Today, we will continue to take a deep look at the winning projects in the Biomedical and Health Sciences (BMED) category of the 2024 ISEF Global Finals to see how these outstanding research stood out from the fierce competition.

Among Regeneron ISEF topic categories, Biomedical and Health Sciences (BMED) is a field covering a wide range of topics that are closely related to human health and medical research. From studying diseases and treatments to exploring the complexity of the human body, BMED plays a key role in promoting healthcare advances and improving the quality of life.

Embark was founded in 2016 and is an educational institution that focuses on background improvement in customized scientific research training for young people. The core team members are all graduates of master's and doctoral degrees from prestigious American universities. Since its establishment, it has exclusively signed more than 3,000 mentors from the Ivy League, MIT, and other world-renowned universities. Through customized scientific research training, students have won nearly a thousand awards in major global scientific research competitions, helping them successfully enter Harvard, Stanford, and other world-renowned universities.

For students who are interested in in-depth research in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences (BMED), Embark provides ISEF online private tutoring to help students make steady progress in scientific research projects and achieve excellent results.

In this article, Embark teacher analyzes the BMED first prize project in depth. Although there may be some shortcomings, our original intention is to provide readers with more thinking angles and learning resources. I hope everyone can draw inspiration from it and learn from each other.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 BMED First Award-Highlights

  • Project Name

BMED001 - Stemness Paradox of Germ Cells and Cancer Cells

  • Project Introduction

This project studies the connection between the primate spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) system and cancer stem cells, especially focusing on the role of the primate-specific cancer testis antigen (CTA) gene.

Through bioinformatics and experimental methods, it was found that these CTA genes are essential for the proliferation of SSCs and cancer cells. The study revealed the dual function of CTA: both maintaining germ cells and being used by cancer cells to promote tumor growth. This discovery provides new targets for cancer treatment and deepens the understanding of cancer biology and evolutionary aspects of human physiology.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 BMED First Award-Analysis

This project is mainly to explore why cancer stem cells are so prolific. The team proposed an interesting hypothesis: cancer stem cells may "borrow" the reproductive ability of spermatogonial stem cells, so they can continue to reproduce.

To verify this hypothesis, the team used bioinformatics methods and biological experiments. They first found out which genes are only found in primates and which genes are particularly active in human sperm. Then, they used a series of experiments, such as knocking out certain genes to see how cells and cancer cells grow, to verify whether these genes really have an effect on cancer stem cells.

The novelty of this high school biomedical research topic is that it considers the problem from an evolutionary perspective and may find some new ways to treat cancer. Moreover, these new methods may be less harmful to the body because they directly target cancer stem cells. In general, this project is quite challenging and well designed.
