Regeneron ISEF 2024 ENBM First Award: Highlights and Analysis

In the previous article, we analyzed the winning projects in the Biomedical and Health Sciences (BMED) category in detail. Today, we will turn to the Biomedical Engineering (ENBM) category in the 2024 Regeneron ISEF Global Finals and take a deep look at how these outstanding research projects stood out from the fierce competition.

The Biomedical Engineering (ENBM) theme in the ISEF competition covers a variety of innovations and research in the field of medical engineering. Participating students can start their research from the following aspects:

  • Medical equipment and technology innovation: This may involve the development of new medical devices, such as surgical instruments, medical imaging equipment, rehabilitation equipment, etc., or the use of engineering technology to improve the performance and function of existing equipment.
  • Biomaterials: Research on the application and improvement of biomaterials, including biodegradable materials, artificial organ materials, biosensors, etc., to promote the development of medical treatment and diagnostic technologies.
  • Medical data analysis and medical information technology: Use engineering technology and computer science methods to analyze medical data, develop medical information systems and health management platforms, and improve the efficiency and quality of medical services.
  • Medical imaging technology: research and development of medical imaging technology, such as CT scans, MRI, X-rays, etc., as well as related image processing and diagnostic algorithms.
  • Biomedical engineering and biotechnology: combining engineering and biological knowledge, research and development of biomedical engineering technology, such as the application of artificial intelligence in medicine, gene editing technology, etc.
  • Life and health monitoring: development of sensors, biochips and health monitoring equipment for monitoring the life and health status of individuals for early prevention and diagnosis of diseases.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 ENBM First Award-Highlights

  • Project Name

BMED001 - Stemness Paradox of Germ Cells and Cancer Cells

  • Project Introduction

The OralAI research project aims to develop an innovative tooth detection system to address the problem of 45% of the world's population suffering from oral diseases. The system combines a custom physical prototype with a new UV-A fluorescent biomarker, and effectively identifies the dental biofilm area in the user's mouth by training two highly accurate YOLOv8 models.

In addition, the full-stack mobile application developed by the project enables users to monitor their oral health in real time at home. Research data shows that OralAI has an extraction accuracy of up to 98.4% and a plaque recognition accuracy of 93.4%, and the actual use of the mobile application is consistent with the test results of the data set.

This affordable and RGB image-based system is not only highly accurate, but also has broad market prospects, and is expected to help billions of people around the world improve their oral health.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 ENBM First Award-Analysis

The OralAI project is really cool! It is a magical tool that allows you to check your oral health at home. The team first used a special physical model to take more than 200 photos of teeth, and then used a new UV-A fluorescence technology to mark the problem areas on the teeth.

Then, they trained two super powerful YOLOv8 models, which can help you find where there is biofilm on your teeth, that is, where there may be problems. What's more, they also made a mobile app. You just need to connect your phone to a special intraoral camera, which will transmit your dental condition to a small computer (Raspberry Pi). Then, the small computer will use the previously trained model to analyze your dental condition and finally send the results to your phone.

This project is very practical, especially for those in developing countries who don't have easy access to the hospital for dental treatment. Moreover, this project not only uses advanced AI technology, but also pays attention to people's health problems. It is quite similar to the ISEF project we customized this year, both of which are designed to make it easier for everyone to pay attention to their health.

About Embark

In the 75th Regeneron ISEF Global Finals, Embark's students returned with honors and broke the historical record again! Our students won more than 100 awards in the preliminary and final rounds, including more than 20 ISEF Global Finals awards (two or more awards per student on average). Not only that, Embark students have won multiple first prizes for two consecutive years! Pick up your own asteroid for three consecutive years

For students who are interested in further research in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences (BMED), Embark provides ISEF online private tutoring to help students make steady progress in scientific research projects and achieve excellent results.

In the following article, we will continue to explore the award-winning projects in the Cellular and Molecular Biology (CELL) category. Projects in this category help to gain a deeper understanding of the basic structure and function of life, explore how cells are organized into tissues and organs, and how biological processes at the molecular level regulate life activities. Please continue to follow our updates and don't miss these exciting content.
