Regeneron ISEF 2024 PLNT First Award: Highlights and Analysis

In our previous article, Embark Tutor took a deep dive into the award-winning projects in the Physics and Astronomy (PHYS) category.

Today, we will continue to explore the Plant Sciences (PLNT) category in the 2024 ISEF Global Finals to see how these outstanding studies stand out from the fierce competition.

Plant science is a discipline that involves many aspects of plant growth, development, genetics, and ecology. It is crucial to our understanding of the nature of plant life and its interaction with the environment. This field includes many directions such as plant physiology, genetics, and ecology. Through in-depth research on plants, we can explore the basic laws of plants, improve agricultural production methods, protect the ecological environment, improve food safety, and promote sustainable development and human health.

Embark provides High school ISEF coaching in the field of Plant Sciences (PLNT), focusing on helping students who are interested in plant science. Our team of teachers has conducted an in-depth analysis of the PLNT first-place project, aiming to provide students with more thinking perspectives and learning resources to inspire inspiration and promote academic exchanges and cooperation. We encourage students to make positive contributions to agricultural production, ecological environment and human health through exploring plant science, and jointly promote the sustainable development of society.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 PLNT First Award-Highlights

  • Project Name

PLNT016 - Sustainable Citrus Greening Disease Management

Figure 1

  • Project Introduction

This project aims to explore curry leaf extract as an effective and sustainable solution to manage the world's most destructive citrus disease - Huanglongbing. Through comparative tests with the antibiotic oxytetracycline, the research team found that curry leaf extract can significantly increase the chlorophyll content of diseased trees and improve their growth conditions.

This project provides new possibilities for the sustainable development of the global citrus industry, and plans to continue observing experimental plants in the next two years to verify its long-term effects.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 PLNT First Award-Analysis

This Regeneron ISEF Award-Winning Project proposes an innovative solution to the problem of herbicide-resistant weeds facing global agriculture. Through analysis, we see that the project combines full-spectrum imaging technology and artificial intelligence technology to develop a model that can accurately and quickly identify herbicide-resistant weeds. The project first modified a conventional camera to enable it to capture full-spectrum images from 300-1100 nanometers, which provides rich information for subsequent image recognition. Then, using technologies such as TensorFlow and Keras, a super weed classification model was developed on the Google Colab platform.

The model showed good learning ability during the training process, and the performance on the validation set was similar to that on the training set, indicating that the model was not overfitting and had good generalization ability. In the test of identifying common chicken eye grass as a susceptible plant, the model achieved a high accuracy of 85.03%, which fully demonstrated the effectiveness and practicality of the model.

The research results of this project not only supported the initial hypothesis that the CNN model with full-spectral imaging combined with hyperparameter adjustment can be used to detect herbicide-resistant weeds, but also provided a powerful tool for modern agricultural management. This tool has broad application prospects, not only can it improve the speed and accuracy of weed identification, but also help reduce pesticide use, reduce environmental pressure, and protect the health of agricultural workers and the public.

In general, this project demonstrated the great application potential of AI and full-spectral imaging technology in the agricultural field, and provided new possibilities for improving the accuracy of crop management and reducing environmental impact. However, in order to promote this technology more widely, more in-depth research is needed in the future in terms of the universality, cost-effectiveness and ease of operation of the technology.

This article analyzes in detail the research highlights and application potential of the first-place winning project "Sustainable Citrus Huanglongbing Management" in the Plant Sciences (PLNT) category of the 2024 Regeneron ISEF Global Finals. Through in-depth research on curry leaf extract, the project demonstrates the great potential of plant science in addressing agricultural challenges, not only providing new solutions for the global citrus industry, but also pointing out new directions for plant science research.

Next, we will continue to publish analysis articles on the winning works of the 2024 ISEF Global Finals. The next article will focus on the outstanding projects in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines (ROBO) category and explore how these cutting-edge technologies will lead the future development.
