Regeneron ISEF 2024 TMED First Award: Highlights and Analysis

In the previous article, Embark Tutor analyzed the winning projects in the Technology Enhances the Arts (TECA) category in detail. Today, let's turn our attention to the Translational Medical Science (TMED) category of the 2024 ISEF Global Finals to see how these outstanding research projects stand out from the fierce competition.

The research of TMED aims to solve real-world problems in the medical field, such as new drug development, improvement of disease diagnosis and treatment options, and innovation of medical technology. By deeply studying the field of TMED, students can understand the latest progress in medical science and learn how to translate scientific theories into practical applications, thereby contributing to the future medical field.

Embark is committed to providing Personalized ISEF project mentoring for students interested in the field of Translational Medical Science (TMED). As one of the key research fields, TMED undertakes the important task of translating scientific discoveries in the laboratory into clinical practice. This transformation not only involves basic research and theoretical exploration in medicine, but also requires close integration with the medical field to cope with various health challenges facing mankind.

In this article, Embark teacher deeply analyzes the TMED first prize project, aiming to provide readers with more thinking angles and learning resources, in order to inspire inspiration and promote mutual learning.

Regeneron ISEF 2024 TMED First Award-Highlights

  • Project name

TMED005 - Multi-Sensory Mixed Reality Therapy for Dementia

  • Project introduction

The MMRTD project is an innovative mixed reality (MR) rehabilitation program for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The project uses multi-sensory stimulation and immersive virtual environments, through three senses of smell, hearing and vision, combined with customized content, to help patients improve their physical and cognitive abilities at the same time.

After an 8-week empirical study on 6 patients with Alzheimer's disease, the results showed that MMRTD not only significantly improved patients' cognitive functions such as learning and memory, but also stimulated their higher interest, emotion and participation. Compared with face-to-face treatment, MMRTD demonstrated superior rehabilitation effects and provided a novel and effective rehabilitation path for patients with dementia.

Regeneron ISEF 2024TMED First Award-Analysis

The Regeneron ISEF Award-Winning Project fully demonstrated the pertinence and effectiveness of its research in the presentation. First, through the quantitative analysis of specific data, the project successfully highlighted the urgency and practical significance of the research problem, while clarifying the research objectives, making the entire research direction clear and targeted.

The integrity and systematicness of the project are also impressive. It not only combines cutting-edge VR technology, but also designs a dual experimental scheme, using advanced computer vision technology to analyze the facial expressions and motion capture of participants, and collecting data through questionnaires, reflecting the dual care of science and humanities.

Regarding the technical advantages of the project, although the specific principles of machine learning algorithms and computer vision methods are not elaborated in detail in the materials, this does not affect the overall presentation of the project. This may be because the focus of the project is more on problem solving and the implementation of verification solutions, rather than in-depth analysis of technical details. This approach may be more conducive to the judges to quickly grasp the core and innovation of the project, thereby avoiding falling into too many technical details.

Regarding the question part, a detailed introduction to the algorithm principle and other technical details of the project may indeed make the project appear complicated, but it does not necessarily leave the judges with the impression that the project is redundant or unfocused. The key is to balance the introduction of technical details with the overall presentation of the project. If the introduction of technical details can better serve the explanation of the project goals, then such an introduction is beneficial. However, if the introduction of technical details is too lengthy or has little to do with the project goals, it may indeed distract the judges and even have the effect of adding more details.

The project successfully focused on the research problem in the presentation and proposed reasonable solutions and verification methods. Although there are some trade-offs in the introduction of technical details, the research value and innovation of the project can still be clearly conveyed as a whole. This also reflects that the judges in this category value students' ability to discover problems, propose hypotheses and solve problems, as well as the rationality and feasibility of the verification scheme.

The 2024 Regeneron ISEF Translational Medical Science (TMED) first prize project demonstrated the pertinence and effectiveness of the research, and proposed innovative solutions and verification methods by deeply studying real problems in the medical field. Although some trade-offs were made in the introduction of technical details, the overall research value and innovation of the project were successfully conveyed.

From the above case analysis of the first prize-winning projects in the finals, it is not difficult to see some significant characteristics: if you want to increase the chances of winning in the ISEF competition, focus on the value of the project topic, the originality of the solution, and the scientific rigor of the research process.

Embark will provide students with Tutoring for ISEF project design. From determining the research direction, advancing the research process, writing papers, to the final application for the competition, we will provide full-time accompanying guidance to help students steadily advance on the road of scientific research and achieve excellent results.
